Speaker 1 (00:01):
Legendary takes from Wildcat greats Ricky Hunley and Lamont Hunley
with Steve Rivera all things Arizona Football. This is the
Honley Huddle, power by Nova Home Loans.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Welcome everybody, Good morning, right and early here. Welcome to
the Honey Huddle, powered by Nova Home Loans. I'm here
with Lamont Honley and Ricky Hunley. I'm Steve Rivera. Welcome
to an early game on Saturday. You like this, guys, I'd.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Love early games. I mean, get up, wake up, play
the game, have the rest of the evening. Love it. Oh, Plus,
you wake up at four o'clock, so I'm tired of
the reason why. You know he wake up at four?
But you sit in the text you do?

Speaker 4 (00:44):
You do?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Good to see you, guys. We missed you last week, Ricky.
But if you believe that I got some land and lake.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Habitsu, Ricky, you know he sat in your seat last week.
I filled that baby up nicely.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
I know.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
That's why so hot.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Still, let's see if that team can return to its
form from the last couple of weeks. Uh. Let's well,
we won't go deep into last week because it was
a disappointing performance, but what did you think just briefly, Well, Uh,
the biggest.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Thing was we we kept losing. The momentum swings. I
mean from the first catch on the kickoff the guy
dropped the ball. I mean, that crowd just erupted. It
was it was just electric for them, and it's a
great moment. But then we did a great job of
coming out on defense and stopped from getting the ball back,
and then we missed a kick you know, and those

(01:34):
things just kind of just kind of deflate you. It
didn't help. Four turnovers and you know, interceptions and they
throw an interception, they get a touchdown and we throw
an interception. Here's here's my thing, guys to you.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
They had to buy, right, yeah, and it's like calling
a time out and then having the poor play the
next play. They had to buy and then they came
up with that. How does that happen?

Speaker 3 (01:59):
Well, it's I mean, in that situation, it's very disappointing,
regardless of the Bay or not as far as how
how things happened. Because you you take an extra week
to prepare exactly four team, you know that there's a
really good team. I personally think that I Irish state
they were a good team, and they're a really really
good team that's out there. Are they the team to

(02:22):
win the Big twelve that's still out there? That's a
big question mark. I think Arizona. As far as what
we did out on the field performance wise, I think
we played hard. You know, I didn't see no quit
in our in our players last week. I think we
played hard. I think there was a few mistakes offensively
that we needed to tune up on that we still

(02:45):
hasn't tuned up on, particularly the offensive line. I think
the offensive line put a put no in a lot
a lot of bad situations. Give some credit. We only
had two penalties and the crowd was just crazy loud.
I understand any of these, but I'm talking about I'm
talking about fundamental, and give them some credit. I mean,
because that's an area you need to improve on. When

(03:07):
you go on the road and you start playing opponents
where the crowd is a factor, you know, crowd noise
and penalties. You know, that's something that you have to
take care of your business. And I think we're doing
a good job of that well, no no doubt, I'm
not quertioning that at all. But you have to protect
Noah better. I mean, and nor is constantly off of
his off.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Of his let's go there, because all week we did
it on my show. He's not the same Noah we
saw two years ago. Right, he's a little bit better
than he did last years. He's got to refine himself.
The balls that he's throwing are either too high or
too low, just not as consistent as we know he
can be.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Correct. Where's the magic, Well, I think it's again protecting
the kid, you know, protecting Kim with the offense and
line and and you know, not to call out any
offensive alignment, you know, but but the left tackle, I mean,
that kid, that kid need to you know, really go
through the woodshed or something with the with the coaching
and you know, you know, get his fundamentals down. I

(04:04):
think they also need to let the running backs protect also.
You know, there was a few plays where I saw
the running back just go just go out in a
pattern versus you know, chipping the defensive linment to help
out the offensive linement. And there are a lot of
chip blocks, chip releases in that game to to help
out the protection. And then that delays the process of coaching.

(04:26):
I mean, a quarterback holding the ball longer to deliver
the ball. Also, and I always stay it was a
team that didn't play a lot of man to man.
They played a lot of zone. So when you're max
protecting and then all of a sudden you only got
a two man route, I mean there's people around one guy,
two guys and you know, so it makes it tougher
to throw the ball to an open receiver when you're

(04:49):
playing good zone defense behind it. Well that's another b
YU is another team that does that, right, But then
then then you got to question the call the play calling.
So at that point in time, I think there should
have been some streams that was that was should have been
called to force them to go into a little more pressure,
force the defense to go into man. And I haven't

(05:10):
seen a stream play this year, have you have you, Ricky? Yeah,
we've known some screen Well correct me if I'm wrong,
because I personally haven't seen one, bro And I think
we need to see more of that to allow nor
to feel more comfortable. Well, I'm not gonna second guess
because I still think he's an outstanding play caller. And
I think that you know, after looking at the game,

(05:32):
evaluating the game, and you know, and we we got
out of a game kind of unscaed because we're not
beat up and we can fix everything that happened. Because
everything that happened to us, we did it to ourselves. Well,
we did it to ourselves. And I think that you know,
moving on in and out of the pocket is gonna help.
You know, we're changing some things up with some play
action that's going to help. But you know, offensively, production

(05:55):
has to start matching the defensive production. For it should
be a balanced team. Like you take a Texas Tech team,
you look at where they're ranked offensively and defensively, it's balanced, right,
And let's not forget Special Team. That's where I wanted
to go. Now, let's not forget Special Team because that
really really has been hurting us, Yes, putting us in
a bad situation, you know, from the kickoff to the punting.
I mean that really has put us in bad field position.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Well, here's the thing, before we go on to the
next game, a lot of people call in during the
week and say, if this happens, if this happens, if
this happens.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Will be okay.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
That's a lot of ifs to happen, right, and that
Special Teams needs to play well. Running backs need to
do well. No one needs to be better, just play
and do well at this. It comes down as simple
as this, do your job. Practice all week to execute.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
Do your job. Now I's got to carry it onto
the game field. Do your job, because you know, it's
not like coach saying, hey, you know, don't do this,
don't do that. No, they're coaching you up to do
the right thing. Now you got to execute on the
Field's let's move forward to the next game.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
I think it it's the get right game sometimes. And
you guys know this better than me. You guys played
in the games when you get beat and you sometimes
you gotta get punched to realize who you are, where
you are and here Arizona.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Is yeah, yeah, well, well we got punched and then
we need to punch somebody back, you know. And I
think there's a game that we need to get well
because you know down the stretch is only gonna get tougher. Well,
you know, again, as I said earlier, what Oklahoma State
team gonna come here? I mean, is it gonna be
the same Oklahoma State team for the last four weeks,

(07:26):
or it's gonna be last year Oklahoma state team. What's
gonna come in and play this.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Let me ask you, Ricky, because I don't know the
situation with you in terms of, uh, did you have
to maybe fill in as an interim at any time?
Because in just in my history, when an interim comes in,
there's a little life.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
The guy's gone.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
And they start showing up just maybe out of motivation.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
That could happen today. I've never had to fill in
as an interim. But it's like you said, there's extra
motivation because in today's climbing kids are interviewing every year
for their scholarship. Back in the day, it was a guaranteed,
automatic renewal scholarship. Now, if you don't perform and you
don't play well, you know you're the guy who's being

(08:08):
considered to going to portal because you know, we need
to get better. And so you know those players they
get it too. You know they don't want to Everybody
just don't want to up and move just because the
coach moved. Sure, you know, they want to build their team.
They want to stay with their friends, they want to
build it together and win games. And I think you're
gonna have a team that's gonna come in here motivated.
Now you know, you can take the win right out

(08:29):
of their sales early on and you throw up two
three scores, you know.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
And well both of you guys, did you guys play.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
For introm I played on the professionally funny and that
was that same Well, well we were so bad, so
it didn't matter as far as that end of it.
But my coach got fired at halftime of a game
and the owner came down just fired the coach at halftime,
so they brought in an introkll for the rest of
the year. So but but now we talk about coaching staff.

(08:58):
The coaching staff is auditioning. And also now you know
Oklahoma State, that is because the ain't no guarantee those
guys gonna be back next year. So they mean they
are coaching up to keep their job or to get
another job, right, you know, So there's the motivation there
on that side.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Also, well, you also have a coach on your side
or Arizona site that still needs to improve because he's
being evaluated too.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
This is a game he can't afford to lose. We
are we can't afford to lose hit him, and this
is certainly a must win game. For us, and I
think it's a great game to put us in a
great situation, get back on track, beat up on Oklahoma State,
and we got BYU the next week.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Well, you use the word momentum, Ricky, I don't really
like that word, but I think it's more of a
confidence builder if you beat him by whatever, win one,
beat them by a sizeable number, and just kind of
move yourself forward.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
Absolutely, but hey, just win. Yeah, No, winning is everything,
you know, because it goes into column as a win
or a loss, and you want to win. Right.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
I think you you interviewed Brent earlier this week, we
have some of that, right, you talked about that how
big of a weekend it is. Uh, So we'll have
him on the other side of the commercial. Anything else
you guys want to talk about in terms of rewinding
or just moving forward.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
After watching this week of practice, I think these guys
have truly reset, you know, and uh, you know, they
refocused and they've got things lined up the right way,
and I'm excited to see how they come out come
out of the box. You know.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Well, let me ask you the four games in uh,
at least the people I talked to a lot of
people don't know how good this team is or bad.
They just don't know yet. Because of the three games
they played last week's performance.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Who are these guys, well, I think they we we
see what the defense can do. I mean, I think
the defense has shown their character in regards to what
can expect or when not they expect. I mean I
think right now, like you say, I think the offense
was really you know the question, don't know. We don't know,
you know, what type of offense we're going to be seeing.
I mean it's gonna be an offense that's gonna constantly produce,

(11:03):
you know, our offense that's gonna you know, I don't
think our best production yet. I don't think we've seen
our best production or best and I think that is coming.
I mean, Noah's on track to to set school records
here within the next few weeks. I mean five yards
and he's already moved up again, you know, five more touchdown,
he'll move up again on the record truck. Then Ismael Mahdi.

(11:26):
That kid is special, you know, like you're saying, get
some screens to him. It's a home run. And the
whole backfield, it's a strong backfield. They've got a great
concern and let them play.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Yeah, okay, and then it's a good backfield, a group,
a group of guys or they can go to and
just just money.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
Complement each other. Well, Craig ab be back. You know,
he had this great game the game. You know, he's
healthy and MANI and and uh, you know, I'm excited.
I'm still waiting to see us have a breakout game
with our tight end game because I think that that's
a secret sauce. Sure. Well, okay, let's let's talk about
the tight ends. And I mean Osen, I think osin them. Yeah,

(12:08):
the use of Chin, I think he's a really really
good they're using him very well. The the other tight Endnett, Okay, Bernett,
actually how many He didn't play many plays last week
and last last game, and last game was his first
time out there from all these different injuries, you know.
And and I like the way the kid looked. I mean,

(12:28):
I like his body and you put hit the pot
very well. So I think they got to put both
on them on the field together at the same time
to create some matchups there. The thing is, you know
you got spivey bag, you know you got what Lee,
you know you got hunter. We didn't have all fear
of those guys on the field the same time.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
You know, well, let me tell you they dropped a
lot of balls. That's another It's just a lot of little.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Things, you know. But some of those balls that they dropped, okay,
you know, the ball was not in the right position
to catch, you know, but some of them were in
position they should get some of us. I was listening
to someone about the way they're catching the ball as
far as I think there was an article someone wrote
tell me in regards to the receivers seeing the ball,

(13:13):
bringing the ball in, okay, versus you know, getting the
ball and run with the ball. I think an article
this weekend with Brennan was was talking about defining how
the wide receivers should be watching the ball all the
way in, and those are the things they're going to
try to be more disciplined on this particular weekend, well
during the week doing practice and whatnot. So it could

(13:34):
be interesting to see, you know, if those things, those
disciplines did they practice in practice this week and watch
the wide receivers, if theyre going to really watch the
ball bring it to their body versus catching the ball
and leaving it out there, creating opportunity to turnovers.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Lastly, before we take the break up, is it more
about you, guys I'm taking Arizona or you playing the
other guys? Fix you and worry about them, or just
worry about you and you'll beat them.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
I think it's just us. I think we need to
worry about the other team. Just just play your game,
play within the realms of your responsibility, play with great effort,
play with red line. Everything he talks about redline. It's
all about execution one hundred four hundred. I mean, you
know and be accountable when you make a mistake and
then fix it. Two And that's true. I mean I

(14:21):
think any game, you always gotta be accountable for yourself
and not worry about the opponents.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
Give me three things each of you, real quick, if
you could of the importance of what they need to do.

Speaker 3 (14:31):
One is have a great attitude. Have a great attitude
going out there, confident attitude, playing together, attitude, you know
and give your best effort, and everything you do to
play only last about three to five seconds. Come on, One,
fix turnovers, special teams okay, two win third down, two defense,

(14:54):
create turnovers. Three win the damn game.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Cuts you to Jay's baby, to Jason Lamot your.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Three oh finish. Finish the game, you know, I mean
from the beginning to the end. Finish. Okay, with that,

Speaker 2 (19:57):
They welcome back to the Holly Huddle with Lamont and Ricky.
We're gonna go to Brent Brintan Now from Ricky, how
about it?

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Big noon kickoff? Yeah it's good. Yeah, I love it.
We've been waiting for an afternoon game. But I'm looking
at this game and I'm thinking, now, will this be
a statement game?

Speaker 4 (20:23):
Oh?

Speaker 11 (20:23):
Shoot, I don't know. I mean, I think any big
twelve game is a big game. Just everybody in the
conference is good. Everybody in the conference. If you don't
show up, you know you're gonna get beat. So, you know,
I think every game is just a critical game in
this thing. Everybody's really good.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
Yeah. And you know, I remember your comments last week.
You talked about we had to be consistent, we had
to have clean play, and you know, going back to this,
you know we didn't hit red line last week. No,
it came to consistent and clean play. Yeah, those exactly
the things you said we needed to do, Yeah, to

(21:01):
be able to win against a good team. Yeah. No,
that's the thing.

Speaker 11 (21:03):
And when you go on the road and you're playing
a top twelve, top fourteen team in the country, you
can't turn the ball over four times, right, because we
have the two interceptions and then we have the two
turnover on downs.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
You can't do that. And you know, and we can't.

Speaker 11 (21:17):
We can't give up the big plays we gave up,
and then on third down we were not nearly as
clean as we needed to be on both sides of
the ball. And so to me, that's the game it was.
It was really disappointing. It was a tough, tough measuring
stick for us. But I also give my credit to that.
You know, those guys, they've done a good job. They've
built a program over last decade and they're really good,

(21:38):
really really good football team.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Yeah. You know, I look back and where we started
last January and how far we've come. I mean, sitting here,
we're in October with three and one, we give me
going to going to October three and when we just
finished up September. We feel like we're in a good place.

Speaker 11 (22:00):
Yeah, I mean I think, you know, I feel like
we're in a good place. I feel like, you know,
we we need to keep attacking the right things to
give us a chance to play the kind of football
we want to play here at Arizona. You know, the
practice environment is so critical, you know, coming off of
a tough loss last weekend. You know, what kind of
intention do we show up for the work? You know

(22:21):
what I mean? How physical are we going to be
in the practice environment? How detailed are we going to
be in the practice environment, because all that stuff has.

Speaker 3 (22:28):
To level up. I was really impressed offensively. I mean
I couldn't hear myself think on the field. Sometime it
was loud, it was a wide out, they were into it.
It was it was the atmosphere was fanatical. Only two penalties,
I mean, doing something special with the communication. No, No, I.

Speaker 11 (22:50):
Think we've made some progress there, you know, on the penalties,
and I think the offensive line did a great job,
you know that, you know, just you know, I think
they gave up one sack.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
You know.

Speaker 11 (23:00):
I think the communication, no false starts, I was critical.
That was really really good, you know, And I think
that's one of the you know, there were some positives
in the game, and I think that part of it
when you look at you know, that part of it.
You know, how we ran the football, how efficient we
were on first down. I think when you think about
the uh, you know, our defense, you know, they I

(23:21):
a would say they had forty seven carries and they
averaged a two point four yards per carry, you know.
So I think there's there was some really good stuff
in that game. Just we we didn't handle the momentum swings.
We did not respond well enough, you know, when momentum
swung the wrong way, and that's something we have to
work on.

Speaker 4 (23:41):
Now.

Speaker 3 (23:41):
You mentioned about the defense, I mean our numbers are impressive.
I mean we look at total defense, we rank seventh
defense in the country, Past defense with twenty four, Russian
defense with twenty eight, turnover margins with seven. Yeah, these
are all like almost hundreds of percent better than where

(24:04):
we were last year this time. And then so and
then then you get a guy to return like Stoops.

Speaker 12 (24:11):
I mean, just the energy that Eddie brought in the game.
How would you feel about his return? I thought it
was great to have trading back. He's a great leader,
he's a great player, He's just a great human being.
He's an awesome person to have on your football team.
He's obviously played a lot of football.

Speaker 11 (24:25):
Here at Arizona, and so he brings all of that
experience and that leadership to the to the practice environment,
to the locker room, and that stuff is critical. And
the guys were so excited to see him to play
in order to see him play, and he made plays
in that game, which was exciting. So I think we're
going to get a huge shot in the arm from
from Stukes being back, and I think that's going to
add to that defense.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (24:47):
Yeah, Riley Wilson, Riley Wilson, you know, we got him back.
He's been you know, banged up a little bit, working
through some stuff, and so I'm glad. You know, obviously
he did a great job with the opportunities he got.
And that's what you know, that's what players need to do.
You know, when they get a chance to play, they
need to show everybody, you know, what they can do
to help the football team, and Riley did that.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
Yeah, I've been really particularly impressed with the portal transfers
and the number of starts that these guys are getting.
And we're probably tops in the nation as far as
guys that are transferring in that actually plan, and I
think that's been a big difference in our team.

Speaker 11 (25:24):
It's a new team, absolutely no, And I think I
give a lot of credit to you know, guys could
Crowley and Fletcher Kelly in our recruiting department and our
general manager that you know, I think they did a
great job of identifying people. The coaches did a good,
really good job of evaluating those people, and then we
had to recruit them and it was a fast and furious,
chaotic time recruiting all those players at the same time.

(25:45):
But I thought the staff did a great job. I
thought our recruiting staff did a great job. And you know,
I think it's always going to be like that, some
version of it in college football now, so it's what
we have to get used to. But at the end
of the day, the evaluation piece is so important because
it's not just are they enough at football, it's also
what kind of person are we bringing into our locker room?

Speaker 3 (26:04):
Right?

Speaker 11 (26:04):
Is this guy a jerk? Is he going to treat
people with respect? Is he going to work hard? Is
he going to go to school? Like, there's all those
things that you have to figure out, you and you
have a very very small window to figure it out
in that the decisions are made so quickly and.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
That plays in hand right with how well does a
guy or how quick does a guy respond in adversity. So,
coming into this week we play in Oklahoma, say they've
had some adversity, we face some adversity, bringing one in September,
that's a pretty good run in my opinion. I mean,
now we're we're going to get in to meter the
scheduled that's right next third of the schedule. How did

(26:40):
you think our guy's going to adjust?

Speaker 11 (26:42):
Well? I think it's important that we put, you know,
last week behind us. We learned from it and we
come back stronger. And I think guys have to lean
really hard on redline. That's one of those things, Like
it sounds simple, but effort, execution and accountability. I mean,
those things will get us playing the kind of fo
all we want to play. And last week you know,
we didn't execute well enough, and so how you know

(27:05):
how just dialed into this practice?

Speaker 3 (27:07):
Can we be you know every day this week?

Speaker 11 (27:09):
So it gives us a chance to play the football
we're capable of playing on Saturday against Oklahoma State.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
Yeah. Well, I'm excited for him, coach, because I mean,
just sitting on an opportunity to do something great to
kick off the month of October like they did September.
You look back and say, Wow, what the hell of
a team you got here? This is a big game.

Speaker 11 (27:27):
This is a big game for our team, and we
need to attack the process. It gives us a chance
to play the play good football this weekend against Oklahoma State.

Speaker 3 (27:33):
Okay, well, thank you coach, and we have fun this week.
Bare down buddy, thank you. Nice job. Wrick You mister positive.
How come you can't be nice to me like you
are to Coach Brennan. You know when I look at you,
I want to bite my arm off. Still said, don't
hurt me, Ricky, don't hurt me. No good job. I mean,
you know when you listen to Coach Brennan talk though, man,

(27:54):
I'm telling you that energy that he has to you know,
keep these kids going in the right direction. You know,
you you got to applaud that to Yeah, what.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
Are the observations you made, Ricky that I thought was
pretty good the transfer portal. Those kids have done a
good job here. Yeah, and that's all you can hope
for what.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
They've done. If they've created opportunities for themselves, right, you know,
they moved because they wanted to have an opportunity to
They've embraced the hard work that it takes to be
a player, and uh, you know, those guys have come
together and jailed as a team, and uh, there's still
some work to do, still work in progress. But like
we said, it's like I'm waiting to see our offense

(28:34):
catch on fire. When they catch on fire, and then
they balanced the efforts that the defense is putting out
on the field, you're going to see a different team
out there, and you're going to see people show up
in droves because it's gonna be fun to watch, right right.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
Well, that's what Lamont's he's been waiting since the day one.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, I just like you said, I
just want to see all of these elements come together,
and to start with our quarterback. I mean, we got
to get him in a little more confident back there,
you know, a little more in control, and you know
with his wire receivers and particularly his offensive line, and
when that day come, you're absolutely right, it's gonna be special.

(29:11):
I can put a bet right here that he's going
to set some records today.

Speaker 2 (29:16):
I do think that today will be that day that
they'll play really well and win handily. If you will,
there are three point three touchdown favorite. Whether they cover
that or not doesn't really matter, but to your point,
win the game.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
Win the game and look good due good the process.
Eliminate this stupid mistake. It's like coach said, we need
to have a clean game, right, We need to have
a penalty free game, mistake free game, clean execution. You
may not win every third down, you may not win
every drive, score every drive, but you know what I'm saying,
move the ball, control the field position so that they

(29:51):
always have to go eighty yards to score.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
Let me ask you a dumb question, and you can
give me whatever answer you want. You're both defenders. That's
a dumb question.

Speaker 3 (30:00):
Yes, yes, let me ask you.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
Guys were defenders, right, so when the offense and I'm
sure this happened a time or two when you played,
when the offense doesn't do as well as you as
everyone hopes, do you did you get frustrated? Did you
what was your situation on that end of the end
of the road.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
I think it is naturally to get frustrated because we're
so competitive. You know, if I don't see the offense
producing and doing well, I mean I get to the
point with let's stay out on the field defense. You know,
let the defense play. And it's a natural thing to
be frustrated because we're all competitive people, you know. And
if I think I can get out there and dominate

(30:38):
and create turnovers and make things happen, make tackles, then
you know that's more productive than what the offense is doing.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
So so, Ricky, you're a player and a coach. So
as a player, did you feel that? And as a
coach do you say, don't worry about that, will take.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
Care of you know. As a player, I always want
to get out there and make more tackles. I didn't care.
I always wanted to be on the field. You know.
As a coach, you keep your guys busy. You get
them in the in the huddle over there, and you're
making corrections. You're making sure that they're ready for the
next series. You know, you're prepping them on what we're
gonna call on first down, what we're gonna call on
second down. If this happens, If that happens, we call

(31:14):
a pressure. Make sure everybody knows they response. They don't
have time to sit here and worry about what the
offense is doing. Do your job, don't pay them mind
any attention to that. You got to block out the noise.
You know, if you're gonna be a football player and
you well, let me ask you everyone, do your job.
Do your job.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
You got one hundred people in the room. How many
people you think do that? Do your job well? How
many people make the NFL to on a team verse
two or three? How many those in the NFL make
a Pro Bowl?

Speaker 3 (31:45):
I don't know. You tell, numbers get small, and so
you know, if it still comes down to guys that
are able to narrow their focus, you know, and be
in the moment. It's aude is an attitude. It is
greatly an attitude. I mean, attitude is everything. You don't
have a good attitude and you're not prepared for this challenge,
you're losing well so naturally with based on as an attitude,

(32:07):
that's something that can't be taught, right, right, I mean,
so now it's about recruiting that right player who has
that attitude. You don't agree that it can't be taught. Yes,
it can be talked, like Steve will buy into some things.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
No, I think you both can be ready at the
same time. But that separates the okay from the good
player from the NFL dude, right, the next level player.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
Yes, you know. I always separate with what Brendan and
trying to do as far as.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
To not just NFL it's success from a regular person
in any.

Speaker 3 (32:40):
Profession, because in life, here's the thing. To be good.
You do what's required. To be great. You do what's
required and then some So there's a lot of guys
who want to be those and then some guys and
do a little bit more, but they don't do the
little bit more. They don't have that extra space. If
I'm a receiver and I want to be a great catch,

(33:00):
I'm catching two hundred balls, three hundred ball and till
my hands a sore every day, and no one has
to tell you. Nobody has to tell me we're doing it.
So that again. You have that in you. It's it's
like character. What are you gonna do when nobody's watching it?
We're coming here every day every week. We see Steve.
He's crying, he's got tears. You so happy? Here I go.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
I got the hudl he said, yeah, boo hoo, We're
gonna take you.

Speaker 3 (33:26):

How you doing. I'm going save me from the brothers.
Save me from the brothers. They're they're painted the neck.

Speaker 3 (38:10):
Don't help him? Lance? Yes, hey, Lance, you know we
got another brother up there would get you if you
try to save him.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
Yeah. If you guys have brothers, you have enough brothers to.

Speaker 3 (38:18):
Cover all the stay they do. How the heck are you?
And thanks for joining us.

Speaker 4 (38:25):
I'm doing a lot doing what she was football season,
so you know it can never be mad about that.

Speaker 2 (38:30):
You're talking to coach Briggs. Coach Briggs. Okay, go ahead,
rick you go ahead, work your magic.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
Lance. Now you know I'm a fan, a huge fan
of Lance Briggs. In my opinion, Lance Brigg is probably,
if not the second best, maybe the best pro linebacker
that's left Arizona to go into the NFL. I wasn't
one of those guys, you know, I wasn't a great pro. Okay,

(38:58):
and then you know, kudos to you. You have an
opportunity to get on the ballot for the Hall of Fame,
and and and and and they compare you to some
pretty spectacular guys. But for some reason, there's a hump
that that that you just can't get over, that we
need to get you over to get you on that ballot.

(39:20):
You mean, what do you what do you feel that
that is? I mean, I look at you, I look
at London Fletcher. Those are guys are just kind of
hanging around the perimeter that that need that push.

Speaker 4 (39:32):
Well, I'll say, you know, and you know, I mean,
I don't know. There's an hurt me even more trying
to get into the Hall of Fame, but uh, it
does it. I'd be I'd be more upset or I'd
be upset there if if I were not inducted into
the Hall of Fame, if I knew that retired uh,

(39:55):
retired coaches were the ones that were making the decisions,
you know, but based off of the process and the
way that it works, you know, I'm not upset, you know.
You know, it's it's uh, it's it's.

Speaker 3 (40:09):
The writers, you know, that decide.

Speaker 4 (40:11):
And so they have their way of doing it. And
because of that, you know, there are certain guys that
you know that get overlooked here and there, you know,
and I'm good, like I have numbers to back up
to back up. You know. It's not just the decorations,
not just the off pro its, not just the Pro Bowls,
you know. I mean I also have the numbers that

(40:33):
that say I should be in there too. So I
think the longer that I'm I'm not inducted, the longer
there's that people see that there there's there's obvious holes
in in the process.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
Well, I think it's like, you know, you got inside
linebackers versus outside linebackers who just rushed the passer every
day like an edge guy, and then they get so
much more credit just because they get a sign But
I mean last year you had a lot of interceptions,
been a lot of interceptions, You had a lot of tackles.
You know, you had seven Pro Bowls. I mean you

(41:10):
you had some very very good numbers. It's just you know,
maybe just bringing awareness to what it takes to be
in that position, because uh, you know, it's not an
easy position to play, especially will back in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (41:26):
It's not and uh you know, you look at you
know the things that that really have always helped me
together are the things, you know, just playing my peers,
the coaches that I played with, played against, you know,
and and the love you know that I've gotten, you
know from from over the years and playing and and

(41:47):
it's been a very big process of Number One, proven
proven myself right about who I thought I always had been,
you know in the game. Proven the guy the coaches
and players wrong that thought that you know I wasn't
Was it an elite type player? You know, it was
soft because I came from the Pac twelve or Pack
ten at the time, you know. And so about you.

Speaker 3 (42:11):
When you get to the NFL, you go to the
Super Bowl, super Bowl champion, No, there's no sae. Let
me ask you a question. Just Lamont, by the way,
congratulations someone was being thought to be on the battle man.
I think that's that's a huge, huge accomptonment. Now there's
some players that's in the Hall of Fame. What linebacker,

(42:32):
type of linebacker that's in the Hall of Fame that
you would say it's lack a Lance Briggs.

Speaker 4 (42:39):
I'll tell you, you know, my favorite linebacker growing up was
Juniors Am Junior was a guy with a lot of energy.
You know, he loved playing you know, behind the line
of scrimmage. He was a downhill guy, you know, And
and I like to think that I was very much
a down hill guy. You know. Most of my play

(42:59):
A lot of player that I made will behind the
line of scrimmage. So if there was one linebacker that's
in the Hall of Fame that that inspired me the most,
it would be Uh. It definitely would be a june
to say out.

Speaker 2 (43:13):
So Lens, when you look back at your career here
at Juve, Uh, what do you think and what type
of memories do you have?

Speaker 3 (43:22):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (43:22):
My memory is that you of a well, you know,
the fondest memory is is being a top ten defense
in the country. And you know that that defense was
a lot of fun. You know, we were we were
really moving around. We were making a lot of dog
on plays. That was my first year starting that linebacker,

(43:43):
and and I I saw what we could be and
what we could become. Uh. I remember the the the
triple overtime game against Washington State, you know, and and
and being around players that ended up going into the
league and having having great NFL careers, you know, being

(44:05):
able to influence you know, some of the younger players
that came in and growing great relationships from them, you know.
And even right now, you know, and I coached you football,
you know, my tenue, you know, and and my my
nine you head coach, the nine ye head coach for
our organization is David Hitton, you know. And it just

(44:27):
makes a lot of sense for the guys that that
that we trusted each other on the field, now we
trusted trust each other as coaches coaching the youth.

Speaker 2 (44:36):
Let me ask you, guys, because I tell you guys
all the time in the hunting situation, you guys were
just a bunch of lunch pale dudes. We had Tom
Ton of Cliff in the years, just team with it
and hard dudes. I think your era, Briggs was more
of a bunch of dogs, a bunch of tough dudes.
Would you kind of agree with that?

Speaker 4 (44:53):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean I say that, I could
say that. I mean, we wasn't. There's all a much
those dogs are all gonna be a few softies, you know,
around That's just the way it he is, you know.
And and then you gotta and you guys all know,
you gotta weed them out so you figure out who

(45:14):
the tough guys are. You know when you when you
throw those paths on every day because one of the
things to shoot I had learn through him. I had
players farmer on the other end, and we were challenging
each other every day. Like I was not gonna go
out on this practice. And I'll be damned if I
let players go out there and embarrass me and Claires
to me, people won't know about him, a little lot

(45:35):
about him outside of the Arizona family, but players would
would have been one of the top running backs in
the country, you know when he was at his peak,
you know, and we went to get each other every day.
So you know, when we strapped it up and I said,
we knew one on one on one and we're putting
at each other, I'm letting I'm telling all the other
lines back and listen, I'm gonna ti kids, ask me
you go kick all the rest of the guys ask
after I do this, you know. And so you know,

(45:58):
but that's the mentality, you know, thuss Harger. So you
weaed him out him out. When you find out who
doesn't want to go against.

Speaker 3 (46:05):
The best, doesn't linebacker words there bro no no, but
you get better. But playing against better dudes and what
same way with us when we was in school, we
had to go up against the better running back to
and we we we welcomed that, you know. And actually
one of the guys during our time that was, you know,
pound for pound, the best running back that would go
up against us in practice was David Adams. Unbelievable David Adams,

(46:30):
and he we made him better. He made us better.

Speaker 2 (46:32):
Right, Well, coach breaks, how do you coach the kids
now because sometimes to this coaches don't even let him hit.

Speaker 4 (46:41):
Yeah, it's it's hard, man, it's hard trying to all
figure out.

Speaker 11 (46:47):
You know.

Speaker 3 (46:47):
It's kind of like our job here with Steve hard.

Speaker 4 (46:53):
But I mean, you know, I'll tell you. You know, at
the at the youth level, at the high school level,
you got to hear every day as much as you
possibly can, as much as you're allowed to hit. You
gotta hit because that's what you required to this game.
There's a level of violence, a level of aggression that
that that you have to uh, you have to consistently

(47:15):
show or perform. It's wanted to be successful. The teaching
techniques like the teacher he's supposed to do. But if
you're not violent at the point of attack, and you're
not aggressive when people people put their hands on you,
You're gonna lose. You're gonna lose. You're gonna lose. You
guys all we all know that. Everybody else on this call,
we all know that. So I can only tell ecause

(47:36):
you so far if that dog gate is not in you,
If it's not in you, then there it is.

Speaker 2 (47:43):
That's what we talked about. Before a dog got teeth,
you gotta be willing to bite. So that's before we
before we started with you.

Speaker 9 (47:50):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (47:51):
Many think that Ricky is the goat right here at
you of a and he's this all star big guy,
but he was blatching poor.

Speaker 4 (48:00):
So he was.

Speaker 3 (48:02):
And giving you a lot of love.

Speaker 2 (48:05):
When you hear that from him, you were kind of
even taken aback by your thoughts on what he was saying.

Speaker 4 (48:12):
I mean, I always appreciate. I mean, I should almost
play for rickyed and Cincinnati, you know, and but yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
you know. It's it's always an honor to to to
to talk with rick or to be around him, you
know what I mean? And uh, and know the history,
you know, I've seen the highlights, I know the history.

(48:33):
I know, Shoot, I know I played with I coach,
I was played, I played under Robert Hair, you know,
and so you know, so that you know, that's one
of those familiar linebackers from from that era. So you know,
we've had a lot of conversations about Ricky, you know,
during those days, you know. And uh, and so I
feel like I'm I'm I'm a part of an elite

(48:55):
group of linebackers that came out of Arizona, you know,
from Ricky to Byron, you know, I mean, Marcus Bell.
There's there's so many guys, uh, Antonio Pierce, that that
that I'm honored to be a part of, you know.
And I love that club, and I love for I
want more guys to join that club, you know what
I mean. I thought for a period of time we

(49:16):
were getting ready to become the LBU, one of another
LBU in the country, and we're kind of really starting
to fall off after that because it's so many so
much change.

Speaker 3 (49:25):
Lance, I don't want to make sure you understand this.
This Hall of Fame Monitors score uh, in my opinion,
sucks because what it does it gives too much credit
to a guy who played outside linebacker, who just comes
off the edge, gets a free hit, and it's the
wow factor. And that wow factor is something that the

(49:49):
inside guys don't get because they're they're down in the trenches.
You're coming downhill. You'll have to take on guards, take
on tackles, then make the play. And where Mike Singletary
gets that credit, Lance Briggs should get that same kind
of credit, and so your score should go up and
you should be a guy who's a candidate for that
Hall of Fame one day. I hope that it changes.

(50:11):
I hope they go back and reevaluate it.

Speaker 8 (50:13):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (50:14):
And you shouldn't have to campaign for yourself because, like
you say, the numbers speak for themselves. And what you've
done on the professional level is just remarkable. I never
did it, never could.

Speaker 11 (50:26):
You know.

Speaker 3 (50:26):
I was busy doing too many other things. But that's
for another show. What I did on the college level,
you certainly have done on the pro level, and you
deserve to be recognized for it. You Well, how about
you pay him to say all of that.

Speaker 4 (50:44):
Shoot, I'm on the budget now.

Speaker 3 (50:47):
Just okay, keep coaching them little kids up, because it's
one thing to be coaches, one thing to be coached
the right way. And I know that you're coaching them
the right way. And when you're coaching them the right way,
they'll play fast, they'll play physical. It's like coach Gonzales,
he gets these guys, does it play like the hair
is on fire? Like Nick Saban just said this morning
on TV, you don't break down when you're going to
make a tackle. You run through people like a brogue

(51:08):
used to say, like an arrow coming out of the bowl.
And uh so when you when you bring in the force,
you know you're gonna win most of those battles.

Speaker 4 (51:17):
Okay, yeah, man here, let's let's keep tugging away. And
I appreciate it. I hope that. I hope that that
what we're teaching and we're developing. We're developing the right way.

Speaker 2 (51:27):
Let me ask so, let me let me ask you.
Every coach has to have a secret sauce. What's yours.

Speaker 4 (51:36):
I think I think I'm a good I think I'm
a good motivator. I think, you know, I leave the
I think as i've gotten older, I think i'm I
think I'm soft. I do think I'm soft, but I
think my my assistant coaches are not, you know, and
so there's good ballance. You know, and and whenever something
has and and so whatever it needs to be implemented,

(51:58):
disciplined wise. You know, please, you know, don't let the
tournament right now, right now, I'm not going to stop you.
I want to teach, but I also want to motivate them.
So so you know where I'm very firm. I'm very
very firm in in whether you did it or you
didn't do it, you know, and why that happened, and

(52:18):
you can give them the why. But I'm also I'm
also consistent with letting you know how close you were
to making that play or how close you were to
being right at the age that you are. You know,
if I just if I just memory in you're wrong,
you're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong. I don't
know where it goes. But if if you were wrong

(52:40):
in that play at this age, I want you to
know how close you were to being right. And if
you just take this one last step, if you just
been with me just a little bit more, you make
that play. And so that's to me, that's part of
the development at at nine and ten, that that different.
And you know, twelve and thirteen, my spentation for these

(53:05):
nine ten year olds, Well they become twelve and thirteen,
it's gonna be different. And the way that that sternness
in the way that it's being taught is going to
be different because by twelve and thirteen, we've been together
for long enough. You know what you're supposed to be doing.

Speaker 3 (53:17):
A Lance. We you know, we got a big game
this weekend. I just want to get some of your
your your points on us up against Oklahoma State this afternoon.
Have you been watching us? And we only got about
a minute? Lance, thank you?

Speaker 4 (53:29):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've been watching. I've been watching. I
think I think this is the game you must have,
you must take advantage of. You know, if there's one
school right now that's in disarrayed, it's Oklahoma State Arizona's.
I think we're a twenty and a half point a
dog on this one and our favorite on this one.

(53:54):
And that's for a good reason. You know. Now, whether
we cover we don't. You know, it's that lets.

Speaker 3 (53:59):
You know what we're supposed to do.

Speaker 4 (54:01):
Against in against his team. Someone can go out and
play this team the way that we're supposed to with
great effort, great attitude, you know, play fast, like physical,
play smart. We should win, but we should cover. We
should cover. Just like Vegas says, we should cover, We
should cover and beat them by at least three touchdowns.

Speaker 3 (54:21):
Let's do it.

Speaker 2 (54:22):
Yeah, bare Down, brother, thanks for coming. Thanks, thanks so
much for showing up with us. Appreciate your time.

Speaker 4 (54:30):
You got it.

Speaker 2 (54:31):
Thank you him great, Great to talk to him, Great
to talk to you guys, even you Ricky.

Speaker 3 (54:38):
Thanks guys today, fantastic show. Enjoyed it. Talk to you
guys next week. All right, bare Down, Let's do it.

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
